Necklace Sizing for Women and Men

Necklace measurements are based on chain length. Although there are some standard necklace sizes you will want to determine which is best for you. Remember that the size you choose could change depending on the piece you are looking to purchase. There are some things to consider when looking for the perfect necklace size. Things to consider are your neck size, your height, where you want the necklace to fall on your body, and more.

How to Measure the Right Necklace Size for You

  1. Measure Your Neck

Your neck measurement is the most important of all the measurements. If the necklace is not long enough from end to end to go around your neck then you already know you will need to seek a longer chain. To measure your neck you will need a soft tape measure to go all the way around your neck. Once you have that measurement you will add at least 2-4 inches to that number to determine the minimum necklace size that will work for you.

Deciding how many inches to add to the actual neck measurement will depend on the look and style you are seeking. The more you add to the actual neck measurement the lower the chain will hang on your body. For example, if your neck measures 13 to 14.5 inches then an 18-inch necklace will likely be perfect for you. If your neck measures 17 to 18 inches then a 22-inch necklace will likely be the better choice for you.

  1. Take Your Height into Consideration

When seeking out the perfect necklace size another thing you want to consider is your height. Your height and necklace length will determine where the necklace falls on your body. Lengthy necklaces tend to look quite overwhelming on a shorter person, just as short necklaces can get lost on a taller person. For example, if your height is 5 foot 4 inches or shorter you will want to stick with necklaces under 20 inches. If you are between 5 foot 4 inches and 5 foot 7 inches any necklace length will work well for you. However, if you are taller than 5 foot 7 inches you will want to stick with longer necklaces.

  1. Choose A Size that Flatters Your Body Type

Different necklace lengths will flatter and accentuate different parts of your body in different ways. If you are thinner and hold a slighter body type then a short, thin chain will work great for you. If you are a fuller body type a longer and thicker chain style would be a flattering choice. Ultimately, you will choose whatever style you like most.

  1. Balance the Length of Your Face

Necklaces can make your face appear wider, narrower, fatter, thinner, and even shorter and elongated. This all depends on the natural shape of your face and jawline. For instance, a choker lengthed necklace ranging from 10 inches to 16 inches will help to soften the sharp angle of the chin on those who have a heart-shaped, rectangular-shaped, or oblong-shaped face. Whereas those who have a rounder or shorter face shape should avoid short necklaces and instead look for longer lengths. This is because necklaces ranging from 26 inches to 36 inches will elongate the jawline better. All necklace lengths are flattering for those with an oval-shaped face and jawline.
